Saving the World (Scotland) - Day 0

- scotland career

I got confirmation about my new job in December, but it’s only sinking in now. Whenever I told friends and family that I got the position they reacted way more excited than I was feeling in that moment, and it was almost as if I needed their reaction to remind me of how much I had actually wanted it, and that I had been working towards it, in a way, for about two years. But I was feeling a bit numb. Satisfied that I got the job, yes. But still a bit unsure whether it really was what I wanted to do, or if I had only focussed so much on exactly this one job so that I wouldn’t have to figure out something else. And I already missed all the free time that my travels, unemployment, and self-employment allowed me.

And as I am still waiting for my criminal record from the USA to arrive I can’t start yet. But I took part in the Induction Day where I met my future line manager, and she’s happy to wait for me. And just being there and getting an insight into the workings of the parliament, the government, and the Civil Service, I realise that this is exactly what I want to do, and I remember why, and there’s the excitement back. It is a fast environment, there will be pressure to be efficient, diverse interests have to be juggled, decisions have to be made quickly, and people are actually making a difference. They make projects happen, they put tax money to good use, and I firmly believe that most of them want to improve the lives of many.

Also, in the main government building Victoria Quay in Leith where I’ll be working and which is 7 miles (11 km) or a 40 min cycle away from home they have showers, lockers, and drying rooms for cyclists! As well as a pool and a gym and a Costa Coffee in the house. I’m quite excited to be starting any day now!
