Things Falling into Place

- career

Sometimes, people are astonished by my capacity for cheerfulness and optimism regarding my job search seeing that is has been going on for a while and turned out to be more difficult than expected. But I think there is no point in being depressed about things that can’t be changed if I can help it. I can’t force employers to employ me. All I can do is meet people, network, write job applications, ask for advice and take it, keep an open mind, and do all of this as best as I can. And as Kat has said to me, eventually, things will fall into place. Or as Dirk has said to me, so far I’ve always managed to achieve what I want. Sometimes you maybe just have to adjust what you want.

And it seems like today is the day that things are finally falling into place. When checking my email I see that someone from an engineering firm I once applied to (click) is trying to get in touch with me. I call him back and it turns out he is offering me a permanent job which will start in January. The job sounds great and involves many aspects (but not all, because that, sadly, is impossible in one job) of what I really want to do with my life - one of which is living in Edinburgh. Another one is infrared spectroscopy. And a third one is working for a good cause (health and environment). What it is not is a job with the Scottish Government. However, in a second email I received today I am offered an internship there. My hope is to get relevant policy experience, get a realistic (and, I realise, possibly disillusioning) impression of what government really is about, and validation for all my efforts. So I might do both.

In other good news, my 21 kg parcel (clothes and books, shipping was 25 € with GLS) arrived today when I was home - it survived the transport, looked quite battered though. Then, there’s lots of dancing coming up this weekend, a Thanksgiving dinner later this month, and a visitor from Germany in early December. What’s not to like?

Great news, congratulations! But how can you posibly manage a full-time job and an internship at the same time? - der Erich

Well, I meant to do the internship first and the job starting from January. But it won’t be possible, as the security procedure at the Scot.Gov. before I could start there would take too long for this short an internship. - Maike
