Old Friends

It is great to make friends all over the world, but meeting people only shortly makes it less likely for friendships to last, and only very few and very special people stick and stay more than Facebook friends. But people you grew up with and share your roots with will always be known - even when you weren’t more than acquaintances in the first place.
And so it happens that one of those acquaintances from my early childhood felt comfortable enough to contact me the other day to ask me a favour. His girlfriend lives in Edinburgh while he lives in Germany, and for some surely very romantic reason he needed a bouquet of flowers delivered to her today. Since she is staying on campus, regular flower delivery services wouldn’t do, and I jumped in. I picked a nice bouquet - which cost surprisingly little, took the bus to her university, found her building and didn’t get in. The door opened with a number code which I didn’t have, and there was no bell. It was raining a little bit, but I was cheerful enough and just waited for a bit, and sure enough, after a few minutes someone came along and let me in.
Inside the building I quickly found the flat, rang, was let in by one of her many flatmates, and asked for her. More flatmates appeared from the doors in the hall and seemed very curious about the stranger with the flowers (me), especially once she was found and obviously had no clue who I was and why I was giving her flowers. So I told her who they were from, who I was, and we chatted for a bit, as she turned out to be a lovely lass. Neither of us could figure out the occasion, but we agreed to have a Gluhwein together on the “German Market” (Weihnachtsmarkt) in December.
