One-Day-One-Job Challenge - Day 2

- career

On day two of my one day one job hunting challenge I applied for the first time for an applications engineer position. And the only reason that I did that was because it is in fact an
Applications Engineer (Infrared Spectroscopy)

position and I LOVE infrared spectroscopy. I am aware of how nerdy that sounds but it is true. From my own experience and from speaking with spectrometer company reps I have some ideas of what application engineers do, and that is basically solving other people’s characterisation problems and explaining to them how they can solve them themselves the next time. In this case, it would also mean to set up an infrared spectroscopy lab which I am not sure how I feel about. So much power. So much responsibility. A challenge definitely.

Perks:
Perils:
  • It’s a small and young company. How much training and development opportunities can I expect?
How good a match do I think I am? 9/10
How well does the job description match my career aspirations? 4/10
How painful was it to write the application? 4/10

I got an interview for this next week. - Maike

I rocked the interview. I also liked the company. There is one more candidate, however, who’s Dutch and had had a phone interview. Apparently, he’s got a PhD in infrared spectroscopy… I know, right? But I don’t think that extent of expertise is really necessary for the job. He seemed to struggle a bit on the phone, language-wise, but the company liked him nonetheless and invited him for a face-to-face interview in Edinburgh. May the better match get the job offer :) - Maike
