Overland Track log #2

- hiking australia

When I wake up at sunrise it’s so cold in the hut that my breath forms little clouds in the air. I’ll have to wear more layers tonight.

Today’s walk is rather short so I do a side trip to Lake Will and am rewarded with a nice little secluded beach, in which I take a dip even though it is so cold my feet hurt in the water. Interestingly, just my feet. I wash myself a bit and hang up my towel to dry since the sun has come out and without the wind it’s nice enough to sit for a bit.

A guided group, apart from the guides mostly elderly, lovely ladies, joins me here, and I think I’m better off having organized my trip myself. For all permits, transport and food I paid $500. They paid $2500. What they get for the money is a guide, food and better huts. I don’t need a guide, the trail is clearly marked. I don’t mind carrying and preparing my own food. But I am deeply jealous of their mattresses and hot showers. Not enough to be willing to pay the extra $2000 though.

What a ripoff! But even 500 $ seem to me quite pricy for some days of outback fun. But if it’s worth it, then why bother? I am surprised though that summer in Tasmania is that cold.Best wishes from the “Pott”! - der Erich

I’m not sure if it’s a ripoff though. It’s $230 in national park fees alone (was it for me). Then, they have to pay two guides for a week each, and helicopter all the food in (and the waste out) twice a year. And finally, they probably pay loads of fees for being allowed to have huts and do commercial tours in the national park. But on the other hand, they don’t have competition… - Maike

Uh, and they provide three course meals for dinner and local wine! - Maike
